The Angel of Death loomed over the next victim he would take. It was a middle-aged man, totally unaware of the tragedy about to occur. He was with his family, at a carnival somewhere in the South of the United States. Details of locations never really occured to Thanatos anymore, since he knew where he was supposed to be at the time he needed to be there. The man's wife had gone off with her son into the midst of the mass amount of food places. The middle aged man himself had just gotten off a roller coaster called "The Screaming Demon". He and his little girl immediatley got back in line to go on the ride again. The man didnt know it, but he would never reach the front of the line. Thanatos watched as the man begin to clench and unclench his left hand, looking at it with worry. He clutched at his heart with his eyes bulging in their sockets. Thanatos moved in, it was just about time.
He stared at the struggling man a moment before plummeting his skeletal hand inside the mans chest and ripping his soul from his body. The body collapsed on the ground. Nobody could see Thanatos of course, and it didnt show any physical mark where he reached into his chest. The soul he had just pulled out of the man took a moment to materialize and became a ghostly figure of the physical body of the man that had just died. The man appeared suprised as mostly all did. He glanced down at his daugher crying and screaming at the empty shell of his former body. "Honey, its alright, I'm fine, I'm here" he said in a panicked voice. He tried to grab hold of her but his hands and arms just went through her body , and she took no notice of him. "No, I cant be... No" said the man desperately trying to grab hold of his daughter. "No, please! Please!" Thanatos walked up to the man and told him it was time to go. "No, I'm not going anywhere! Put me back, you monster, put me back!" Thanatos gripped the mans shoulder lightly. The man tried as hard as he could to shake Thanatos but, the Angel of Death"s powers could not be defeated. The man, once realizing he could not defeat the Angel of Death began to beg and plead with him. He said nothing that Thanatos hadn't heard before. He just ignored the man as he did with most of his victims.
Thanatos snapped his skeleton fingers and the man's hands and feet were bound with golden chains. He snapped his fingers once more and the chains began follow Thanatos as he began to float into the sky. The man moved as wildly as possible, trying to somehow get back to his family and the life he was leaving behind. The man didnt notice but as they floated upward, the sky changed form. It was no longer the blue clear sky as it was before, but now a dark and empty abyss, continuing forever. As they kept floating into the emptiness the world faded away and the man sobbed even harder after it was gone. They floated in the darkness for a short amount of time until they came to a spot where Thanatos stopped. He turned to face the man. Thanatos snapped his fingers and the chains on the man disappeared. The man was now quiet and not looking at Thanatos. His appearance was nothing less than defeated. He lifted his head slowly to look at Thanatos. Thanatos snapped his fingers again and into his hand appeard the tool he used to cut open the place where he was sending the man. The place he was sending him was into limbo where one day God would judge the man based on how he lived his life on Earth. Thanatos slashed with his tool into the open abyss and immediately a portal was opened. The man's eyes widened with fear, but he stayed silent. Thanatos snapped his fingers and the tool, his scythe disappeared. Thanatos faced the man for the last time before sending him into the portal. "Enter" He said in his cold metallic voice. The man hesitated before making his way into the portal. As soon as he was all the way through, it shut and Thanatos' time with the man was over.
Thanatos had to manually take the souls to the abyss and limbo but when he was alone he could shadow travel anywhere instantly. He snapped his fingers and he dissolved into the abyss and appeared outside the doors of an office. He walked through the door into a large office where a man was talking on his office phone behind a desk. All souls were the same to Thanatos but he knew there were certain people on the Earth that were somewhat famous for their accomplishes. This man was a famous business man and one of the wealthiest men alive. Thanatos came to be standing in front of the mans desk. As he stood there his mind drifted back to a time when he took another famous soul. He rememered it as vividly as the day it had happened.
Thanatos stood outside of a set of double doors. He walked through the doors into a large room covered with maps and nice furniture. Desks covered with papers through out the entire room. The room was empty save but one man, who was sitting leaning against the wall behind a large wooden desk. A gun was resting in his lap beside his hands. The man had a mustache cropped to where it didnt exceed further than his nostrils and his dark brown hair appeared to have been wrung through with his hands several times. In the distance Thanatos could hear gunfire and explosions. The man's face was extremely pale and sweat was beaded on his brow. His eyes drooped and he blinked slowly several times staring at the gun in his lap. Thanatos watched the man in patience, it wouldnt be long. Thanatos could feel the deaths of soldiers all around him and their souls waiting for him to deliver them, but it was not their time to be delivered, but this beaten down man that appeared before him. Thanatos slowly walked up to the man and crouched beside him. He stared at him through his hooded cloak with curiousity. The concept of suicide was always interesting to Thanatos. He couldn't picture choosing to die. The man on the ground grasped his right hand around the gun and stared at it for a moment longer, then with a quick motion he pointed the gun at his head and fired. Thanatos slowly reached into the man's chest and withdrew his soul. The soul materialized and the man stood before him. He glanced down at his body and then at Thanatos. The man never said a word. Thanatos snapped his fingers and the chains that would take Adolf Hitler's soul from the Earth appeared.
Thanatos looked at the man on the phone, laughing and chatting. The man finished his conversation and hung up the phone. Thanatos walked around the desk and stood to the right of the man. He stared at him curiously as the man scooted his chair back so his legs weren't under the desk any longer. He placed his head in his hands and rubbed his temples slowly. After doing this for a moment he sat up and opened a drawer to his desk. He pulled out a regular shoe box and opened it. He pulled out some pictures and stared at them for several minutes. He glanced into the box and his stare remained there for a moment before reaching into it. He kept his hand in the box as he stared at the picture. His eyes were red and watering. He took a deep breath, and withrew his hand from the box. The blast from the gun echoed down the hall.

Creation of the Angel of Death
He had heard it before, many times, the begging. The constant askings of more chances and mercy. It bothered him in the beginning, but after so long, their cries became just a numb humming to him. The Angel of Death, that was his "official" title, though he never really thought of himself as much an angel. He had many other titles that mortals had chosen to call him throughout history, none quite as famous as "The Grim Reaper" or Death itself. He hadn't asked for this job and he certainly didnt enjoy it. He was not a cruel spirit as the fables described him, but a creature whos life on Earth took a turn for the worse and so placed was his "curse". He was being punished for what he did in his life on Earth by being given the responsibility of death. He didnt sleep, he didnt eat, he constantly roamed the earth taking souls to limbo where their fates would be decided by somebody else he turned his back on long ago. He didnt consider what he did on Earth as living. His hate and anger had come from the cruelty he was shown there, and the job he was given after. More than the job itself he hated his memories.
His haunted past had loomed in his mind every single hour of the Earthly days he spent collecting souls. He can never shake the thoughts and images that were painted inside of his mind. He couldnt even remember how long ago it had happend. How long ago was it that he began his punishment? How long had it been since he cried out to God for help and God just simply watched? The time he lived in was one that in history was never recorded. He lived in a time when the simplicity in the days was still apparent and the nature of life still pure. It is said that Adam was the first man created, but Adam was just the first given the title of man. Adam was not the first intelligent life created. Long before Adam was, there lived nameless creatures. They resembled man in looks, though overall larger in size, and they swam in water and had no need to breathe. Land was not yet formed. They had souls, though at this time souls were created pure and remained that way since the introduction of sin had not come yet. They lived each day to the fullest and life was good.
In this time the Angel of Death had another name he went by. His race in general was one without titles but they had names for themselves individually. They had no written language, but his name was Thanatos. Life was perfect for these creatures and death was not yet present on the Earth. Without sin in the world these creatures were innocent and were not wrapped in the modern day faults. That was until the tragic day in which Thanatos changed everything forever.
It was an average day for the creatures. Anything they wanted or desired came to them simply by asking for it from God at their holy place. God only denied those requests in which a creature would somehow gain more power over the others. Thanatos never seemed to ask for what he wanted or desired as much as the other creatures. He always felt that if he hung back and asked less of God then he would someday have his one request that he desired most, granted. Thanatos did not see why his request would not be answered, after all he above all the other creatures had created remarkable things and did whatever God asked of him without fail. Others had let God down in tasks he asked of them but never him. So on that day, Thanatos waited until all the other creatures had left the holy place in which they presented their requests and gifts to God. He swam into the light, which was projected for him to enter in order to speak to God. Thanatos knew the rules and knew that his request if granted, he would have something the other creatures didnt have, and he would be above them, but he already felt that he was above them and believed that God did also. He however, was wrong.
A moment later Thanatos emerged from the light in a rage. Never had any of the creatures felt as angry as Thanatos did at that moment. In his rage he began to destroy the holy place, he desecrated the entire place with his bare hands and his own power was revealed to him. The others hearing the noise coming from the holy place came quickly. As soon as one swam in the door Thanatos attacked him and ran a sharp dagger used to sacrifice gifts to God through the creatures chest, as soon as he did they were all blinded by a white flash of light. Nobody in the room could see. Then God spoke to Thanatos and told him that what he had done on that day would follow him for eternity, that he would be cursed and his very name would mean death. His punishment would spill over onto the rest of the creatures God would create, so that death came to all. "For what you have done in your anger, you will be the deliverer of souls to a place where they will await judgement. You will never find peace in your crime and you will be tortured all of eternity by the knowledge your actions." Thanatos begged God to release him for his crimes and forgive him. But then in the white light Thanatos' flesh began to be stripped from his body. He cried out to God over and over, begging for forgiveness. Begging for just another chance and for God's mercy, just as the souls do that Thanatos delivers. He begged and pleaded, the pain he was feeling was more than he could handle. His punishment was more severe than anything he could have imagined possibly.
Thanatos, his very own name now meant death. He was experiencing his own death over and over as he thought back to that day when his flesh was stripped from him and he was covered in a black hooded cloak to hide the monster he was beneath. As God had promised he had still not forgotten his crimes and the memories of that dreaded day were still stained heaviliy into his mind. He had delivered souls from that day forward and he suffered each and everyday from it. He hated God, he hated him for the punishment he bestowed upon him, he hated him for creating his very existence, he hated him for everything . In his one moment of impurity, Thanatos had been dealt the cruelest of punishments.
The Angel of Death continued to transport souls as his mind drifted to that day. They were all crying out to him, begging him to take them back. One of them yelled "Please! My wife was pregnant with my baby boy! Please take me back to them! Please I wanted a son so badly" Thanatos turned very slowly to face the man. He felt pity, yes he felt great pity for the man, because at one point, Thanatos had lost everything in his rage at being denied a son.
